Starting point

From the fountain to the counter

La Rotonde is Aix's front door: the great fountain, the square, and the Cours Mirabeau running under the plane trees. Asian Road is the stop at the end of that walk — Southeast Asian street food with no fixed country, inspired by Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia and Malaysia.

You'll find it at 9 rue Laurent Fauchier, in the old town, right behind the courthouses. No booking, no tablecloths: you walk in, you see the kitchen, you order at the counter, and it's already there.

Why make the trip

A place built for the break

The dishes are set: the freedom lies in the pairing. Here's what awaits at the end of the Cours.

The walk

From La Rotonde to the boxa bit of buzz outside

The spirit of Southeast Asia's night markets, brought to the lanes of Aix: the wok in sight, an open kitchen, and an order that shows up before you've had time to wait.

  1. A cook tossing noodles in a wok over a high flame

The wok, over a high flame

Noodles, fried rice, flavours: everything goes through the wok, right in front of you. That's what gives Asian street food its taste of fire.

  2. A box of steaming Asian noodles with meat, spring onions and sesame seeds
    02

    The box, steaming hot

One base and one flavour brought together in a box you can eat in or carry away, just long enough to reach the Cours or a fountain-side bench.

  3. A kraft takeaway bag held in front of an Asian restaurant lit by red lanterns

The kraft bag, and off you go

Drop by, choose, and go. Most boxes leave the counter as takeaway, heading back into town.
